Launceston Airport is located on the outskirts of Launceston, approximately 9 miles from the centre of from Launceston city centre. After Hobart International Airport, Launceston is the busiest in Tasmania. More than a million passengers uses the airport on an annual basis, a period of growth fuelled by cheaper flights from budget airlines.

The airport was used in the 1940’s for training pilots and there are two hangers left on site from this period. The airport has been extended and up graded over the years to include a new terminal building in the early 1960’s and a runway extension was finished in the early 1980’s. A further period of redevelopment saw the terminal building extended to include new shops, cafes a new departure area and an extension to the landside passenger lounge.

Launceston is Tasmania's “northern capital” dating back to Victorian times; it has some very interesting buildings dating from the 1870s and 1880s. There are some unique attractions to visit including the natural wonder of the Cataract Gorge which is just a short walk from the city centre where you can take part in abseiling or hang gliding. For the beer drinkers a visit to the J Boag and Son brewery would be interesting. The River Tamar runs through Launceston on to George Town and Bass Strait and can be enjoyed through a cruise or by road. The whole area is a treat for anyone who enjoys the outdoors and likes the idea of visiting orchards, lavender fields, vineyards and strawberry farms.

A trip to the popular seaside restort of Bridport is great for fishing enthusiasts and in Scottsdale there is a Forestry EcoCentre to visit. The lovely town of Deloraine, close to Launceston, plays host Australia's biggest working craft fair, and if history is your thing, a visit to the towns of Evandale, Longford, Campbell Town and Ross would give you the opportunity to visit the 19th century country manors as well as the workers’ cottages, all of which are still working communities.
