Bridgetown is the capital city of Barbados, located within the parish of Saint Michael and is often known as simply "Town". All areas of Barbados are made up of parishes and Bridgetown has neighbouring parishes of Christ Church and St. James. It is the political heart of Barbados and is also where all of the large cruise ships dock allowing its passengers to disembark and visit the shops along Broad Street, Barbados's most famous shopping spot. The Bridgetown Port was recently dredged to allow safe access and berthing for all of "super cruise ships".
The city is full of history and has been named a World Heritage Site of UNESCO along with the house that George Washington stayed in whilst visiting the island. Although it is a capital city, with Barbados being such a small island tourists don’t have to travel too far to come across a fabulous beach. Not far from Bridgetown is Brighton Beach which is more than a mile long and is a favourite spot for visitors taking part in water sports such as snorkelling. Next door to Brighton Beach is Paradise Bay with its warm calm waters, ideal for fishing and diving.
