Wider online reach for Expedia

Expedia is one of the biggest names in the online travel industry, and according to early reports, the company has bought the car hire firm, CarRentals.com. Early reports in the media speculate that despite the change in ownership, the CarRentals site will effectively be run the same way it has been, with no major changes to the site or its interfaces.

Expedia is largely seen as an industry pioneer and leader, despite increasing competition that has cropped up in recent years. This most recent move see Expedia carving out one more part of a niche for themselves, with the site already offering bookings for flights, hotels, car rentals and even entire vacation packages and cruises.

But keeping a business that big booming costs money, and Expedia has had its share of criticism relating to service charges that are tacked onto a deal that render it far less of a bargain than the customer bargained for at the outset. Other companies lie Kayak.com and Travelocity are hot on the heels of Expedia, but with this new acquisition, the pioneer seems to be keeping just ahead of the game.
