Close to a dozen rental car operators are heading to India to take advantage of strong market demand.

As more people in India opt to hire a car for both leisure and business reasons, there has been an increase over time in the demand for rental car services. The growth in demand has been great enough that more than a dozen brands are expected to enter the Indian market in the near future.

Avis, a leading American rental car company, is one of the major firms planning on establishing a presence in India. Other U.S.-based operations, such as Dollar and Thrifty are also preparing for entry into the market. Other names that arise in discussions regarding industry expansion on the sub-continent include Alamo, Enterprise, National and Vanguard, among others.

In many parts of the world, the car hire business has seen a downturn in recent months, attributed to high fuel prices and regional economic conditions. In some countries it has been due to improved public transport options, such as in Singapore, the UK and the US.

Rental car companies are beginning to turn their attention to emerging markets for business expansion. As India still is lacking in suitable public transport options in many areas, it is seen as a promising prospect for many of the major operators as a place to grow their business.
