One hundred organizations and businesses are backing a third, environmentally-sound, Heathrow runway.

The organizations backing the construction of a third runway for Heathrow expansion include the London Stock Exchange and Standard Chartered, which have joined the coalition of businesses, trade unions and aviation companies known as Future Heathrow in their support. The groups consider Heathrow Airport to be “vital” for business, and believe that another runway is essential to keep Britain – and London – at the “heart” of the world economy.

BAA, the owner of Heathrow, and major airlines including British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, are lobbying the government for construction approval for a third runway, in order to boost capacity at the busiest airport in Europe. A final decision from the UK government is expected by the end of this year.

“The success of the City of London depends on its infrastructure. A bigger and better Heathrow is an absolute priority if we are to sustain London's competitiveness,” said the chairman of the London Stock Exchange, Chris Gibson-Smith, in a prepared statement.

Members of Future Heathrow, which include not only British Airways but also the GMB union, support the airport’s modernization, according to the organisation’s website.
