New Zealand has been voted the number one choice in long-haul holiday destinations once again.

Voters in the annual UK Reader’s Travel Awards are readers of The Guardian, the guardian.co.uk and The Observe, who are canvassed each year and asked to choose their favourite foreign holiday destinations.

New Zealand has been the first place choice for two of the last three years in the Reader's Travel Awards. The country placed fourth in 2007, behind Cambodia, Vietnam and Japan – in first, second and third place, respectively.

New Zealand’s tourism minister, Damien O'Connor, has said that the country’s appeal to visitors has a lot to do with the efforts of all those involved in New Zealand’s tourism industry who provide an overall experience for visitors that is unparalleled.

The tourism minister went on to say: "Only by offering authentic and unique visitor experiences and delivering high-levels of customer service will the tourism industry be able to remain competitive and deliver on the goals set out in the New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2015."

Currently, the UK is New Zealand’s second-largest market for tourists. Through the end of August this year, approximately 290,000 British holidaymakers had visited the country.
