Internet visits to snow sports websites up by 18.5%

This winter in the United Kingdom has been particularly harsh, with heavy snow storm and ice putting pay to many people’s plan of travel. Several airports were forced to close over recent months, and people all around the UK were forced to miss work and social occasions as heavy snow and ice made travel impossible.

However, the extreme weather conditions have had their benefits too and it seems that some people have been able to make the most of them. According to Experian Hitwise, the leading online competitive intelligence service, a large number of people have been turning to skiing and snowboarding websites for inspiration before hitting the slopes.

In fact, Experian Hitwise reports that during the first week of January 2010 UK Internet visits to Snow Sports websites were up 18.5% compared to the same week last year.

Robin Goad is the Research Director for Experian Hitwise. In a recent interview he revealed that: "The cold weather and snow across the UK may have caused travel chaos in some parts of the country, but it has also served to remind people of the pleasures of winter sports. There has been an 18.5% increase in visits to Snow Sports websites already this year, as well as 7.0% increase in ski- and snowboard related searches."

The great news for the UK travel industry is that: "While most of the people planning a snow skiing or snowboarding holiday are considering the more traditional resorts in the Alps or North America, some are looking closer to home. UK Internet searches for Scottish Ski resorts have increased faster than any other so far this year, and searches for Glenshee have already quadrupled thanks to the recent weather."
