Leading car hire firm providing support as it pushes sustainability.

Major automobile hire company Avis is providing the fleet used at the Solar Challenge 2010 in South Africa. The event starts in Pretoria today. This is one of the first major sponsorship deals to be clinched by the young event, which is held every two years since it was first held in 2008.

The challenge is a race that runs for ten days and sees solar-powered cars race over 4,000kms through South Africa. The race is due to end in Pretoria on 2 October. This year, teams from Japan, Germany, South Africa and Iran are taking part. Several teams from South Africa are taking part.

Under the support deal, Avis is supplying a total of 21 vehicles. Six of these will be Toyota Prius hybrids. Avis has a total fleet in the country of 40 such cars. This sponsorship deal is the latest in a series of initiatives by Avis aimed at cultivating and supporting sustainability.

Over the last four years, Avis has implemented many such projects, including one aimed at reducing water use at its car washing facilities. The company now recycles 85 per cent of its water, as well as harvests rain water.
