Europcar is seeking customers’ support in order to help those stranded by the ash cloud.

Europcar has asked rental customers to help them make vehicles in its fleet available to people stranded by the latest volcanic eruption as soon as possible. The global car hire firm is asking customers thinking of cancelling travel arrangements and car hire to let them know as soon as possible to more of Europcar’s cars can be provided to travellers who have been stranded.

Flights have already been disrupted, with the bulk of flight cancellations affecting Scotland so far. The ash cloud was heaviest over Scotland on Tuesday, leading to some 500 flights being axed.

Europcar has already been working to help customers whose existing travel arrangements were disrupted. The company has been helping to organise alternative travel options so people can get to their destinations.

The firm is keeping bookings open across all reservation channels. This includes one-way car hire.

The company also says it is not charging customers who suffer delays collecting hire vehicles because of the ash cloud problems. Other special arrangements include waiving its normal cancellation policy and issuing refunds to any customers who have been prevented from using hire arrangements because of cancelled flights.

Europcar says it will also extend vehicle hires for those customers whose departures have been affected. Europcar UK’s Managing Director, Ken McCall, said many customers were choosing to drive to destinations in the UK, rather than fly, because of flight cancellations.

Mr McCall said they were ssing increased demand for hire cars throughout Britain. He added that the firm’s one-way rentals meant travellers could relax, safe in the knowledge that they can still get to their destinations, even if flights have been cancelled.
