Hotel firm Sheraton has announced that it will be opening 20 new hotels in 2012.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc, owner of the global chain said in a statement this week that the Sheraton brand would be a primary focal point for its growth efforts in 2012 via the launch of 20 new properties. The statement also said the additions would make Starwood’s presence in China the largest of any global hotelier thanks to the launch of 12 new major hotels in the Asian country this year.

The expansion effort mirrors those by numerous other global hotel chains that seek to target unprecedented demand in emerging markets, most notably in Mainland China.

About 40 per cent of all planned Starwood’s planned properties in China are to carry the Sheraton brand name, according to company officials, and Sheraton will feature 80 hotels in Chinese destinations by 2015.

Among the additions will be a new 4,000-room Sheraton facility in Macao, which will be the largest Starwood property worldwide. It will feature three poolside-dining outlets, 140,000 square feet of meeting space and will be located on the high-profile Cotai Strip, the company said.

Starwood’s global development president, Simon Turner, said that the firm’s growth strategy also involves the uptick of properties in North America as well as targeting high-quality independent hotels across Europe that are ripe for conversion into brand-name hotels.
