British Airways has opened its new luxury departure lounge at Newark airport.

Last week saw the British flag carrier, which is well known for its ability to cater to upmarket business travellers, open up its new Galleries Lounge and additional facilities at the second-largest airport serving New York City.

The facility is double the size of its previous lounge at Newark and features a location far more convenient to the company’s departure gates, in addition to separate and exclusive dining areas for business and first class customers. The former offers top-of-the-line and private Club World dining booths.

The move comes just after the carrier revamped its flight services to and from the US East Coast gateway via a new array of revamped Boeing 767 aircraft featuring upgraded economy and business classes. The upgraded jets will continue to shuttle New York area passengers to London, officials say; alongside Paris, the UK capital remains the most popular international destination from New York, recent figures have show.

British Airways has long been a significant luxury carrier in the New York market and owns and operates JFK airport’s Terminal 7; it is the only foreign carrier to have such a presence in the region.
