This week saw SeaTac airport launch its brand new car rental facility.

The mega-structure is situated only a few minutes to the east of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport's terminal buildings, officials said, and will help reduce traffic and parking problems at the US hub for transpacific flights. The building is composed primarily of concrete and glass and sits on a 23-acre lot; airport management said that it is capable of handling in excess of 14,000 car rental transactions everyday.

Officials cut the ribbon for the facility on Wednesday morning, however operations will not be in full effect until next Thursday, when NGV-powered shuttle vehicles will begin providing passengers will complimentary connections to the car hire hub, set about five minutes from the airport itself.

The opening of the facility comes nearly a decade and a half after its initial conception. The project saw a number of delays since it was initiated in 1998; construction was halted on a number of occasions via the Port of Seattle Commission due to a lack of funding. However in 2005 officials implemented a $6 per-day fee for all cars rented at SeaTac, which will provide enough funding to pay off project bonds over the next 30 years without using taxpayer money.
