Meteorologists said that strong storms could be expected in the capital today, as well as throughout the southern and eastern portions of England. Meanwhile, the Environmental Agency has issued more than 30 flood alerts and one warning for today following substantial flooding late on Sunday.

This morning saw residents in many areas begin to assess damaged caused by significant flooding. The conditions has also closed numerous roadways and have disrupted rail and coach services. Motorists are being asked to drive with extreme caution after the M1 was closed in the early morning hours due to debris and standing water on the roadway. It has since reopened although police officials have reported at least three accidents amid the severe conditions.

Numerous homes in North Yorkshire saw significant damage last night and fire crews were brought in to help pump water from areas that saw substantial flash flooding. And in West Sussex dozens of people had to be evacuated from a hospital after more than 3ft of water poured into the lowest level and the facility’s lift shafts.

Some homes in London were flooded as well. One resident from South Norwood, Croydon told the BBC that she was forced out of her home after midnight when her efforts to remove flood waters with buckets proved ineffective.
