Car hire firm Hertz has launched the smart fortwo electric drive vehicle in Rome

Car hire firm Hertz has launched the smart fortwo electric drive vehicle in Rome.

The company said in a press release issued this week that the low-emission vehicles would be on offer from its locations at Rome Ostiense and Rome Tiburtina rail stations, starting from only €8 (£6.50) per hour. Officials said that the cars can be reserved via its Italian website.

The effort comes in cooperation with European high-speed rail firm Italo-NTV, according to the release, and takes inspiration from the Manifesto di Roma Capitale (Rome Manifesto) in the effort of reducing the city’s emission levels.

Those operating emission-free vehicles in the Italian capital can enjoy perks such as designated parking bays and exclusion from ZTL (city centre zone) limitations.

Michel Taride, Hertz Corporation’s president and vice president of Hertz International, said that the firm is committed to growing sustainable mobility options for both leisure and business travellers. He added that bringing the smart fortwo electric drive to Rome was a critical step in making such smart mobility acceptable worldwide.

Similarly, Hertz Italy’s general manager Massimiliano Archiapatti said that the scheme would enable customers to transition from train to electric vehicle seamlessly. He said the smart fortwo was the “perfect solution” for getting around the city and spoke directly to the Rome Manifesto.
