Car hire firm Europcar has begun using electric bicycles in the effort of improving efficiency.

The firm said in a press release issued on Wednesday that it would be using the two-wheeled vehicles at all of its London locations throughout the summer months to boost efficiency in its vehicle delivery program whilst cutting CO2 emissions. The move comes in cooperation with UK-based logistics firm AutoClenz.

The announcement follows an advisory from Transport for London (TfL) that residents in the capital should utilise public transport as much as possible from July to September. However Europcar said in the release that many businesses and individuals would still require private vehicles but the electric bicycle program would help to offset the effect.

Europcar UK’s managing director Ken McCall said in a statement that getting around the capital would be “challenging” during July and August, particularly during the two-week Olympic period. He said that in some cases four wheels would be more convenient than two and that the new effort with AutoClenz would help provide the most stress-free solutions to such needs.

AutoClenz director Deryck Worrall said that his company was pleased that the partnership with Europcar would comes at such an appropriate time and added that it was part of the firm's ongoing commitment to greener transport.
