Car hire firm Hertz has announced a newly expanded green effort in which it says it will send zero tyres to landfills.

Officials from the US-based rental giant said this week that the program will see as many as 160,000 tyres recycled each year amid an renewed partnership with US recycling firm Liberty Tire Recycling.

Hertz has been participating in tyre recycling for nearly two decades; the company said that the programme has proved immensely successful. Reports said that at least 70 per cent of the tyres recycled via the programme end up as part of road pavement, fuel, ground cover or other useful products.

An official Hertz press release issued on Monday said that Liberty Tire Recycling will continue to utilise used tyres for a number of different purposes, including the production of rubber mulch, composite railroad ties, playground surfacing and rubberised asphalt.

The move follows other significant upgrades to the firm’s green programmes; the company announced earlier this year that it was adding additional electric and alternative fuel vehicles to its Green Traveler Collection. Models available include the Mitsubishi iMiev, Chevrolet Volt and the Nissan LEAF.
