Car rental giant Hertz is to trim some of its airport branches, reports said on Monday.

Sources close to Hertz Global Holdings told the Wall Street Journal that the move would involve a handful of US airport outlets as a concession to US regulatory officials amid its proposed takeover of Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group.

Experts say the move will provide much-needed help to Hertz with the US Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) examination of the deal, as the body is reportedly concerned that the takeover could give Hertz an unfair slice of the North American car hire market. However, Enterprise Holdings, which owns Alamo and National Car Rental, will nonetheless retain its position as the largest rental conglomerate in the US regardless of the Hertz deal.

In addition, Hertz had previously agreed to sell-off its Advantage Rent-a-Car arm as part of the $2.3 billion (£1.45 billion) takeover. The FTC is expected to announce a ruling on the matter by Friday.

The news follows earlier reports saying that FTC officials had become sceptical about approving the acquisition, although the regulator has thus far declined to provide any comment on the matter.
