Monday saw continued wintery weather across the United Kingdom, leading to travel woes and school closures.

The BBC reported on Monday morning that some 3,000 schools were shut for the day, as snow continues to fall across much of England and Scotland for the fourth day in a row.

Drivers are being urged to use extreme caution. A spokesman said on behalf of the Highways Agency that substantial patches of ice remain in many areas despite treatment being applied overnight. He said that it was very important to leave longer intervals between vehicles and to keep speeds down.

Meanwhile, air travellers continue to see disruptions, as suspensions have been reported at Manchester, Leeds Bradford and East Midlands airports in addition to Heathrow, where hundreds of flights were cancelled at the weekend due to low visibility.

Officials from the Met Office said that snow is likely to continue through the day in southern Scotland and northern England, with accumulation expected to reach 10cm to 20cm.

Rail travel has also been affected; both Eurostar and Gatwick Express are running on revised services, whilst Greater Anglia, Virgin Trains, Southeastern and South West Trains have all reported delays.
