Car hire companies in the United States are holding on to rental vehicles longer, making for higher mileage fleets.

Car hire companies in the United States are holding on to rental vehicles longer, making for higher mileage fleets.

The news comes via a new report published by the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, which said that rental cars with 35,000 and even more than 50,000 miles have become increasingly common in North America.

The article said that at least five frequent travellers on a FlyerTalk forum have testified that they’ve received cars with more than 60,000 miles on a Hertz rental contract this year.

Industry figureheads say that today’s cars are more durable and reliable than in recent years; many companies have opted to purchase new vehicles and rent them for up to two years before selling them. In the past, it was common for large car hire groups to lease the majority of their vehicles.

Meanwhile, the policy has raised questions among some travellers as to how well cars are maintained. One traveller told the Journal that it has become his policy to inspect tires before every rental, and when they’re not to his satisfaction he will wait until a safe and reliable vehicle becomes available.
