Ljubljana's castle hill is one of the earliest known hilltop settlements dating back to the 12 century BC at a later date the site was used as a Roman stronghold. A castle was built on the hill during the 9th century but most of the castle fell into disrepair and the main parts were rebuilt during the 16th and 17th centuries. In 2010 the City Municipality of Ljubljana declared the castle to be an independent public institute.

Many of the towns and villages that surround Ljubljana have interesting attractions to enjoy such as the town of Medvode where the Zbilje Lake is a popular place to hike and cycle alongside.
