Airline passengers stranded by Hurricane Sandy have caused a boom in the one-way car hire market.

The news comes more than two days after the so-called superstorm departed the US eastern seaboard, however delays remain at many of the region’s major airports, leaving thousands of travellers stranded.

Richard Broome, a spokesman for Hertz Rent-a-Car told media that serious weather events often entail major changes with rental patterns. He said that the company has seen a surge in one-way rentals following the arrival of Sandy, as travelers of all manner seek to get home to be with family and friends.

Likewise, the country’s largest car rental company – Enterprise – has reported a whopping 40 per cent increase in one-way hires over the past week. The company owns Enterprise Rent a Car, National Car Rental and Alamo Rent a Car.

USA Today noted in a report issued on Thursday that rental rates have risen somewhat since the storm left, although they remain very reasonable in many areas. However, most car hire firms typically charge an extra fee for one-way rentals and rates are likely to rise as one-way customers often take rental cars from each companies desired vehicle positioning.
