Foreign holidaymakers visiting Florida will now need an International Driver’s Permit (IDP) to rent a car.

According to a press release issued by the Association of British Travel Agents on Friday, lawmakers in the southern US state have recently changed driving regulations. According to the new statue 2012/322.04, which went into force on 1 January, car hire patrons that are not permanent residents of the United States must carry their foreign driving license in addition to an IDP.

Reports said that although the change has been officially in place since the start of the year, car rental companies are just now beginning to enforce the rule. In addition, should rental patrons be involved in a traffic incident, police officers will be checking to ensure drivers are carrying an IDP, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

British drivers can quickly obtain an International Driver’s Permit by visiting a Post Office in person, or can get one via AA, the Post Office website and RAC. The cost is £5.50 per license.
