A train connecting terminals to the car rental centre at Miami International Airport derailed on Sunday.

A train connecting terminals to the car rental centre at Miami International Airport derailed on Sunday.

Reports said that two people were injured in the ordeal and that dozens of passengers onboard the MIA Mover train had to be evacuated from the three cars that came off the tracks. This caused many missed flights, officials said.

One passenger, Alex Saavedra, said to local news media that he was unable to return his rental car because the incident had blocked the entrance to the car rental centre. He said he was forced to drive in circles around the facility.

Meanwhile, the airport began to move car rental patrons to the terminals by bus, but passengers said that the process was far more time consuming than the train.

Spokesman Marc Henderson said on behalf of MIA airport that the derailing was likely cause by a problem with the train’s guide wheels. He said one wheel might have come off completely, causing the train to lean over to one side.

A crane was brought in late last night to remove one of the cars from the track; the vehicle is now being repaired offsite. Airport officials said they are not sure when they will be able to re-launch the MIA Mover train.
